Samsung has finally started to reveal its new products at MWC 2012, starting with this refresh of the Galaxy Beam packing Android 2.3 and a 1GHz dual-core CPU. Just like its predecessor it brings an integrated projector capable of 15 lumens of brightness, enough to shoot a high definition image that's up to 50 inches wide. There's a dedicated app that activates the projection, letting users pump out video and pictures, as well as interact with games when the 4-inch WVGA screen just isn't big enough. It has a 2000 mAh battery to keep the party going -- handy when you're stuck somewhere inconvenient with a few dozen of your coworkers -- 8GB of built-in storage and a claimed 6GB of RAM (we're double checking that, consider it a likely typo until you hear otherwise). Most people diagnosed with MS end up on drugs to control the symptoms associated with the disease. Unfortunately, this does nothing but mask the problem and does nothing to get to the root of the problem. The good news is that supplementation; dietary intervention and complimentary therapies such as reflexology have been shown effective in many studies.
Reflexology aims to prevent or treat health conditions through the application of pressure to specific points reflexes on the feet. The underlying idea of reflexology is that areas of the feet correspond to other parts of the body, and by stimulating those areas; you can heal and detoxify any part of the body. Raleigh Ensemble Players will present Circle Mirror Transformation, a delightful new OBIE Award-winning comedy by Boston, MA-born playwright Annie Baker, on Feb. 17-19 and 23-26 and March 2-4 at 213 Fayetteville St., Suite 202, in the heart of downtown Raleigh, NC.

REP artistic director C. Glen Matthews will stage the show with a cast that includes 2011-12 Raleigh Ensemble Players ensemble members Jillian Holmquist, John Honeycutt, Page Purgar, Ros Schwartz, and Brian Yandle.

According to Dramatists Play Service, Inc.:

?When four lost New Englanders who enroll in Marty?s six-week-long community-center drama class begin to experiment with harmless games, hearts are quietly torn apart, and tiny wars of epic proportions are waged and won.

?[Circle Mirror Transformation is a] beautifully crafted diorama, a Petri dish in which we see, with hilarious detail and clarity, the antic sadness of a motley quintet.?

The play had its world premiere Off Broadway in October 2009 at Playwrights Horizons in New York City. The production won three OBIE Awards ? for Best New American Play; Best Performance; Ensemble; and Best Directing (Sam Gold). It was also nominated for the Drama Desk Awards for Outstanding Play and Outstanding Director of a Play.

U.S. officials urge Europe to deal with its crisis (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? Europe needs to take the reins to tackle its debt crisis and prevent a spread that could damage the global economy, senior U.S. officials said on Thursday, as they stressed that more funding from international lenders is not what Europe needs.

One official also told the hearing by the Senate Banking Committee that an economic slowdown in Europe could affect some U.S. foreign policy goals.

Lael Brainard, Treasury's under secretary for international affairs, described the U.S. economic stake in Europe as "immense" and said although the U.S. recovery has strengthened recently, it remained vulnerable to a potential worsening of conditions in Europe.

But she stressed Europe's ability to address its own problems.

"The challenge Europe faces is within the capacity of the Europeans to manage, and the administration has been clear with our international partners that we are not seeking additional funding for the IMF," Brainard told the hearing.

Resources of the International Monetary Fund "cannot substitute for a strong and credible European firewall and response," she added.

Brainard, who is Treasury's top diplomat abroad, also said that although the direct exposure of U.S. banks to the European countries already under bailout programs, such as Greece, are modest, there is still a wider potential impact.

"Our banking system still has material exposure to the core of Europe and to the broader banking system, which could be impacted if financial stress were to broaden in Europe," Brainard said.

Recent attention has focused on efforts by Greece to clinch a $170-billion bailout and on the social unrest unleashed as international lenders have called for austerity measures.

In response to questions, Brainard conceded that Greece faces "very daunting" economic short-run prospects and suggested said some better-off European countries could help by stimulating their own economies.

"There has been some talk by European leaders about a growth agenda but we think there's more scope in the short run for the internal dynamics of the euro area to (seek) stronger growth in the surplus countries," she said.

Countries in the southern periphery of the euro zone region, including Greece, Italy and Portugal, are struggling with heavy debt loads, but northern European countries like Germany and France are on much sounder economic ground.

The hearing also included officials from the State Department and the Federal Reserve, giving lawmakers a chance to assess conditions if Europe's distress deepens.

Under Secretary of State Robert Hormats said slower European growth and tighter budgets "could have an impact on some of our foreign policy goals" and made clear that the United States expects its overseas partners to meet commitments.

"Whatever happens on the financial and economic front, our foreign policy message has been clear: It is important that transatlantic partners continue to dedicate resources to key priorities, and maintain critical deployments, both military and civilian," Hormats said.

So far, there was no evidence that Europe was any less willing to impose tough sanctions on Iran, and the United States will continue to increase that pressure on Iran, Hormats said.

Steven Kamin, director of the Fed's division of international finance, told the committee that financial stresses in Europe were "undoubtedly spilling over to the United States" and could continue doing so.

"Difficulty acquiring dollar funding by European and other financial institutions may ultimately make it harder and more costly for U.S. households and businesses to get loans," Kamin said.

He said that while it was difficult to gauge all the effects from Europe's problems on U.S. affairs, "it is clear that the situation in Europe poses a significant risk to U.S. economic activity and bears close watching."

NASA Scales Back Mars Exploration Strategy to Fit Budget (SPACE.com)

NASA is fundamentally overhauling its Mars exploration strategy, ditching multibillion-dollar "flagship" missions in favor of cheaper, more efficient projects for now, agency officials announced Monday (Feb. 13).

The decision is a response to diminished funding for robotic exploration going forward. In his federal budget request for next year, which was revealed Monday (Feb. 13), President Barack Obama allocated $1.2 billion to NASA's planetary science programs ? a 20 percent cut from the current allotment of $1.5 billion, with further reductions expected over the next several years.

The cut is spurring a shift in NASA thinking about the best way to study Mars in the near term. This shift compels the agency to withdraw from the European-led ExoMars missions, which aim to launch an orbiter and a drill-toting rover to the Red Planet in 2016 and 2018, respectively.

"Instead, we will develop an integrated strategy to ensure that the next steps for Mars exploration will support science as well as human exploration goals, and potentially take advantage of the 2018-2020 exploration window," NASA chief Charlie Bolden told reporters. No more flagships, for now

The new direction does not imperil NASA's $2.5 billion Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) mission, which will drop the 1-ton Curiosity rover onto the Martian surface this August to investigate if the Red Planet can, or ever did, support microbial life.

Nor does it affect the $485 million MAVEN mission, due to launch in late 2013 to study Mars' upper atmosphere and gather information about how the Red Planet's climate has changed over time.

However, NASA's new strategy acknowledges that the agency won't be launching ambitious, expensive "flagship" missions like MSL toward the Red Planet ? or any other solar system body ? anytime soon.

"A flagship mission in not on the table," said John Grunsfeld, NASA's associate administrator for science. "We're looking at building a moderate mission, and it's a partnership looking at synergies between the requirements of human spaceflight, science and the needs to demonstrate technologies that advance other missions in the future."

It makes sense to set up such partnerships, beyond simply spreading costs around the various branches of NASA, agency officials said. NASA has both science and exploration goals at Mars, after all; Obama has tasked the agency with getting humans to the Red Planet by the mid-2030s.

Bolden said details of the new Mars strategy should be worked out in a matter of months. The goal is to be ready to launch a mission by 2018 and/or 2020, to take advantage of favorable alignments between Earth and the Red Planet.

"We are looking at a basic mission for 2018," Grunsfeld said. "I'm not a betting person, but I'd certainly plan on it."

He added that such a "basic mission" might cost somewhere between the $485 million MAVEN and NASA's $720 million Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, which launched in 2005 and is still studying the Red Planet from above.

Mars sample-return not dead?

NASA's scaled-back Mars strategy puts on hold any plans for a sample-return mission, which would certainly fall in the "flagship" category.

This is bad news for astrobiologists, many of whom believe that sending a piece of the Red Planet back to Earth for study is the best way to assess Mars' habitability, and to search for signs of Martian life.

However, scientists shouldn't give up hopes for a sample-return effort, Grunsfeld said. He is optimistic that careful planning ? and rosier budget outlooks in the future ? will one day give researchers on Earth a chance to study Martian rocks and soil up close.

"We're all folks who dream about science, dream about future science, dream about exploration, dream about Mars," Grunsfeld said. "I would certainly hope that, within 20 years, we have our first carefully selected samples of Mars back here near Earth or on Earth, in laboratories where we really can do the tough work to understand the climate conditions on past Mars, current Mars and the possibility that life might have existed there once."

2 Libyan-Americans now allowed to return to US (AP)

PORTLAND, Ore. ? An official from a Muslim civil rights group says two Libyan-Americans from Oregon who were denied re-entry to the United States from Libya will be returning home, although one man's return has been delayed.

Gadeir Abbas, a lawyer for the Washington-based Council on American Islamic Relations, says the men have been assured by the U.S. State Department they may return home. Fifty-five-year-old Jamal Tarhuni is expected to arrive Tuesday in Oregon.

Sixty-year-old Mustafa Elogbi plans to depart Sunday from Libya after being ordered to delay his departure for unexplained reasons.

Last month, both were kept from returning to the U.S. They say they were subjected to an overzealous and groundless investigation by the FBI.

The FBI in Portland has declined comment, as did the State Department's Bureau of Consular Affairs.

Some say it's time to vaccinate wild apes

Diseases ? often transmitted by humans ? are decimating great ape populations, to the point that some are now calling for vaccinating gorillas and chimpanzees.

Over the last two decades, the Zaire strain of Ebola has killed roughly one-third of the world's gorilla population and only a slightly smaller proportion of the world's chimpanzees, according to a new study in the journal PLoS ONE.

That means that infectious disease is now a major threat to the survival of African great apes, along with poaching and habitat loss.

"The situation is now getting so bad that if we don't take the gloves off and get more invasive, there is not much hope for long-term ape survival," co-author Peter Walsh, a quantitative ecologist at the University of Cambridge, told Discovery News.

Walsh and colleague Sadie Ryan, an assistant professor of ecology at SUNY-ESF in Syracuse, analyzed how disease outbreaks have affected great ape populations over the years.

Using mathematical modeling, they found that the predicted recovery time for just one gorilla population from a single outbreak ranged from five years for a low mortality respiratory outbreak to 131 years for an Ebola epidemic that killed 96 percent of the population.

Resilience of the population is key, since gorillas and chimps reproduce more slowly than most other animals, including humans.

Concern is mounting because many of the diseases are spilling over from humans. On the other hand, tourism is now essential for great ape conservation, so preventing human access to wilderness areas is not a viable option.

"It is important to remember that conservation funding is often largely derived from tourism, that tourism money pays for guards to prevent further hunting, and motivates the preservation of intact habitat by the countries' governments," Ryan said. "Without the funding, the great apes would be doomed."

One way to keep tourism, but also preserve the animals' safety from disease, could involve establishing hygiene and behavior guidelines.

Fabian Leendertz, a wildlife disease epidemiologist at the Robert Koch Institute in Berlin, has held that "we need to be much more proactive about instituting strict hygiene precautions at all ape tourism and research sites."

Ryan and Walsh agree, but believe these precautions can be difficult to enforce. They think the most effective solution is to vaccinate primates.

"Vaccines against all the major childhood respiratory diseases (such as measles, mumps and rubella) should be the first priorities," Walsh said. "Influenza is also likely a possibility. Multiple vaccines are already administered to human children in 'cocktails,' so why not gorillas?"

Walsh is the president of the organization VaccinApe, which has already done a pilot measles vaccination project using hypodermic darts. He has also helped to conduct an Ebola vaccine trial on captive chimps, but the results of those experiments have not yet been published.

While vaccinating the animals with a hypodermic dart remains a viable option, the researchers believe the best way of vaccine delivery is oral. For great apes, vaccine could be included in bait eaten by gorillas and chimps.

The process is not without risks.

Vaccines are capable of causing mild infections in animals. Also, the bait may be eaten by other species. Nevertheless, as Walsh pointed out, "literally hundreds of millions of oral rabies baits have been spread with virtually no spillover problems," with the benefits far outweighing the risks.

Funding for vaccinating great apes poses yet another challenge. Walsh and Ryan envision that funding will, at least at first, come from private sources.

Walsh said, "Once it becomes a widely accepted part of management, it will be built into park budgets and funded from governmental, multilateral and private sources."

The LG Optimus Vu has appeared in a picture next to the Samsung Galaxy Note, giving us all a great side by side look at the next phablet to hit the pipeline.  As we can see from the picture, the Vu's overall size is pretty close to the Note, meaning both are big, bold, and in your face.  The 5.3-inch Note is slightly taller than the Vu, but the latter's 4:3 aspect ratio makes it the wider of the two.  The unofficial specs are said to be a 1024x768 display, a dual-core Qualcomm WPQ8060 processor running at 1.5GHz, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of ROM, and an 8-megapixel camera.

We still don't know much more about this one, but now that it's showing off for the camera we expect we will see it at Mobile World Congress in a week or so.  The real question remains -- is the world ready for a phone this big, or are we entering the tablet space once we go past ginormous on the size chart?

LOS ANGELES ? This year's Grammy Awards promises plenty of intrigue and drama ? much of it having little to do with the competition for awards.

Adele ? one of the key nominees with six nods ? is performing for the first time since having surgery on her vocal cords. A group of musicians upset that the Recording Academy has cut the number of awards have vowed to protest outside the Staples Center, where the ceremony will be held. Chris Brown and Rihanna will perform on the same stage ? although at different times ? for the first time since Brown attacked her before the 2009 Grammys, forcing both to drop out the show.

And the remaining Beach Boys will reunite onstage for the first time in years.

But Recording Academy President and CEO Neil Portnow says that music will still be paramount once the show, which airs live on CBS, kicks off on Sunday.

"This was a really terrific, exciting year for music, so it will give us a tremendous canvas to paint on," said Portnow on Thursday.

Kanye West is the top nominee with seven, including a best song nomination for his "All of the Lights." But his highly acclaimed "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy" and "Watch The Throne," his collaboration with Jay-Z, are not among the nominees for best album, nor is he up for record of the year.

Adele is nominated in all top categories. "21," the year's best-selling album, is up for album of the year, and her "Rolling in the Deep" is up for song and record of the year. Bruno Mars is also up for best album for "Doo-Wops & Hooligans," and his "Grenade" is a contender for record and song of the year as well; he too has six nominations, along with the Foo Fighters, whose "Wasting Light" is up for album of the year.

Other album of the year candidates are Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" and Rihanna's "Loud"; for record of the year, Bon Iver's "Holocene" is in the mix with Mumford & Sons "The Cave" and Katy Perry's "Firework." For song of the year, all the same nominees appear except "All of the Lights" replaces "Firework."

Adele's performance promises to be among the night's highlights. She had to cancel her tour and undergo surgery after persistent throat problems, and has kept a low-profile for months. Other key performances are to include the Grammys first-ever dance-electronic music segment featuring the Foos, David Guetta and others, and Bruce Springsteen and Paul McCartney are to take the stage. Brown's presence is notable considering what happened before the telecast three years ago. Brown pleaded guilty in the attack on Rihanna and has been on probation. Last year marked an incredible comeback for the young star, and he was rewarded with time on the Grammy stage. There had been a restraining order in place that prevented Brown and Rihanna from being close to one another, but it was lifted last year.

Portnow said the decision to have Brown on the show was an artistic one.

"Our approach to the Grammy telecast and Grammy week is it's all about the music," he said. "We feel as individuals, they (Rihanna and Brown) have a place in what we're doing so that's really the judgment."

Another key moment will be the reunion of the Beach Boys, who are scheduled to go on a tour this year. The group was set to announce their reunion at the Grammy nominations special last fall, but Portnow said "the timing just didn't work."

"We're delighted all the details have been worked out (now)," he said.

The Grammy telecast lasts three and a half hours and about 10 awards are given out; the bulk of them are doled out during a pre-telecast. This year, the total number of Grammys was cut from 109 to 78 after a major overhaul last year. Some specific categories were deleted and put in new, broader categories, to the outrage of some who have said the move disenfranchised them. A lawsuit has been filed and a protest is planned outside the Staples Center while celebrities file inside.

Over the past year, several musicians have voiced their dismay about the reductions, from Herbie Hancock to Paul Simon to Carlos Santana to even the Rev. Jesse Jackson.

The Foos' Dave Grohl called the cuts "unfortunate."

"I don't know why they did it. It's unfortunate. Everybody is downsizing everything these days," he said in an interview last month. "I don't know why they cut so many."

Still, there hasn't been a huge outcry about the changes, which include the elimination of separate vocal categories by gender, from mainstream stars. The Academy hasn't budged in its position on the cuts and Portnow said a Thursday protest outside the academy offices shows the lack of general support for the protests.

"I think the most significant info I can give you from the protest today was the number of participants," he said, citing what he called a small crowd. "I don't know that there's anything more to say than that."
