Senate black box bill could see 2015 car models ship with data recorders

ImageBlack boxes aren't just for airplanes anymore, it seems. Though car companies have been installing the devices at their discretion since the early aughts, a new bill, ominously entitled Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century, has just passed Senate approval containing a provision that would mandate the inclusion of these Event Data Recorders in all automobiles produced from 2015 and on. Privacy fans may already be reaching for those protesting pitchforks, but keep in mind this legislation still needs to pass the House of Representatives on its way to becoming law. And given its other, more controversial elements (i.e. revoking passports for unpaid back taxes), it could still head back to the recycle bin. If it does pass Congressional muster, you'll still have ownership of any collected data, so long as the court doesn't require you to hand it over. Regardless of the outcome, we wouldn't breathe a sigh of relief just yet -- your car might be snooping on you as we speak. Just check your owner's manual.

FDA says nanotech may need extra safety tests

WASHINGTON | Fri Apr 20, 2012 5:20pm EDT

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. health regulators said consumer products that use nanotechnology may have unknown effects on the human body, and advised food and cosmetic companies to further study the safety of these tiny particles.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued two draft guidelines on Friday calling for more studies, putting, for now, much of the onus for safety on companies.

The FDA also rejected a consumer group's petition from 2006 that urged a separate category of regulation for nanotechnology due to its "unique human health and environmental risks."

Nanotechnology involves designing and manufacturing materials on the scale of one-billionth of a meter - so small it cannot be seen with a regular light microscope.

It is used in hundreds of products in areas ranging from stain-resistant clothing and cosmetics to food additives, but the health effects of nanoparticles are still poorly understood.

Nanoparticles may be able to penetrate the skin, or move between organs, with unknown health effects.

"Understanding nanotechnology remains a top FDA priority," FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg said in a statement. "FDA is strengthening the scientific tools and methods for evaluating food products, cosmetics, drugs and medical devices."

The FDA advised companies that use nanotech in food additives or food packaging to consult with the agency and show that the changes are safe before selling their products.

"The consequences (to consumers and to the food industry) of broadly distributing a food substance that is later recognized to present a safety concern have the potential to be significant," the draft guide says.

Makers of most U.S. food additives and ingredients can tell the FDA that their ingredients are "generally recognized as safe" in order to legally sell them.

The FDA said nanotechnology does not automatically fall into this category, meaning companies would have to prove additional safety data before approval.

Erik Olson, director of food programs at Pew Health Group, a consumer advocacy group, said companies can often simply inform the FDA that certain food additives are safe. But the new guidelines for the first time show the FDA thinks nanomaterials deserve greater scrutiny.

"The FDA is essentially saying (to companies), we don't think you can just make your own decision a nanomaterial is safe without telling us," Olson said. "That's a fairly new development."

The International Center for Technology Assessment, which filed the 2006 petition, sued the FDA late last year for being slow to reply.

Jaydee Hanson, policy director at the center, said legal action may have prompted FDA to issue guidance for nanotech in food and cosmetics after a delay of six years.

"It's good that they're making recommendations in this area, but they haven't gone far enough," he said.

The European Union requires companies to prove a nanotech product is safe before it can be sold to consumers, Hanson said, while the FDA has only issued voluntary guidelines for companies.

For cosmetics, the FDA said companies should also do additional testing of products that, for example, use nanotechnology to create smoother-feeling moisturizers or lipstick.

The FDA does not require cosmetic companies to submit safety data before selling their products, and the guidance is unlikely to have a big impact on large cosmetic firms like Avon Products Inc, which already comply with European rules.

Avon said it adds nanomaterials like titanium dioxide or zinc oxide to cosmetic products to boost protection against the sun's ultraviolet rays and let sunscreens rub in without leaving white marks. It said the products were proven safe in the EU.

Rare penny sells for $1.15 million

(AP) ? When is a penny worth $1.15 million? When it is a rare experimental penny minted in 1792.

The unusual coin was auctioned off Thursday at the Renaissance Schaumburg Convention Center in suburban Chicago.

Officials with Heritage Auctions say Kevin Lipton of Beverly Hills, Calif., bought the penny on behalf of a group of unnamed investors. The winning bid was $1 million, but the investors also must pay the auction house's 15 percent commission.

Heritage Executive Vice President Todd Imhoff says the coin is made with a copper ring that surrounds a small plug of silver, which was added to make the penny heavier.

Imhof says the coin was never actually put into circulation and only 14 examples of the coin are known to exist.

'Magic Mike': Male Stripper Weighs In On Channing Tatum's Moves

New York dancer gives MTV News his professional opinion on how authentic the 'Magic Mike' trailer is.
By Jocelyn Vena

Channing Tatum in "Magic Mike"
Photo: Warner Bros

Bachelorette parties, beefy dudes and dollar bills — oh my! It must mean that the "Magic Mike" trailer dropped.

And, yes, the trailer is filled with lots of Channing Tatum goodness — read goodness as: he's shirtless, a lot — as well as cameos from fellow hunks Matthew McConaughey and Alex Pettyfer.

The trailer follows the story of Tatum's character, Magic Mike, as he tries to balance his life as a stripper with a budding romance and his dreams of designing furniture. It seems that the Steven Soderbergh-directed flick, which opens in June, will have lots of heart and lots of laughs.

Now, after watching the trailer several (hundred) times, MTV News decided to track down a real-life male stripper to rate just how authentic it really is. Here's what we learned.

The Bachelorette Party
"The bachelorette party, the whole thing is totally legit," New York-based dancer Steve Stanulis, who goes by the stage name Steve Savage, told MTV News about the trailer's opening scene. "I mean, with the guys coming in as cops and the girls, like, getting all nervous. So, that's pretty authentic. It looks pretty good."

The Money
"The whole thing with the singles? The funny thing is when I used to go to the bank, they'd be like 'Oh, my god. Why do you have $500 in singles?' " Savage, who runs Savage Men and helped create "Stripped, The Play," recalled of hitting the bank after a night of dancing like Magic Mike. "And that would be like the ongoing joke."

The Dancing
"The show looks pretty good, the guys dancing and the whole shtick with each guy coming out with a different routine," he said of several teased strip-club scenes that feature McConaughey and Tatum getting their shirtless grooves on. "They're a little overly elaborate, with all the smoke and spinning, but again that's not something you would really see. I mean we're not going to see Fosse. I mean, they did a great job. All the guys look great as well. They're totally believable as dancers."

The Relationships
"The whole rigmarole, as far as being in a relationship and being a stripper, 95 percent of the comments of the girlfriends or the significant others give are like, 'When are you gonna give this up? When are you gonna get a real job?' or what have you," he said of Tatum's onscreen love interest, Paige, played by Cody Horn. "So, they really captured that as well, which is really funny."

The Ambition
"I also like the fact that he's talking about being an entrepreneur because all these guys, well most of these guys, are not just strippers, they're doing other things," he explained of Tatum's dream to make furniture for a living.

The Bottom Line
So, will Savage see the flick? "I would definitely go see it," he said. "I would def recommend it. It looks good."

AOL Radio

AOL, announced late last year that its AOL Radio streaming music would be powered by Slacker Radio (Free, 4.5 stars) in order to improve the music listening experience. The new "AOL Radio powered by Slacker" combines several of our favorite Slacker features while keeping several legacy America Online music aspects, and adds an eye-catching new interface that borrows elements from the Slacker iPad app (Free, 4 stars). AOL may have lost some identity in the move, but the tradeoff results in an all around better service?even better than Slacker Radio's own in some ways.

Don't think that AOL Radio's Slacker Radio implementation means that you can't listen to tunes at Slacker.com?you most certainly can. There are, however, subtle difference between the AOL Radio and Slacker Radio experiences that may make you prefer one over the other. Both are very good, but both finish just behind Spotify (Free, 4.5 stars), the current Editors' Choice pick for paid streaming music services.

Fresh, New Look
The first thing you'll notice when you land on the page is the revamped design. The old and cluttered AOL Radio interface is replaced with a gray and white color scheme and a layout that resembles the Slacker Radio iPad app. The top of the screen features a station's name in the upper-left corner; the upper-right has Facebook "like" and posting options, and a drop-down box for tinkering with options (you can also add Twitter compatibility in account settings). A column on the left houses the various Slacker Radio genres (ranging from Rock to Spiritual to Comedy), as well as custom stations. A history bar lets you quickly see previously played tracks at a glance?excellent if you caught the tail end of a song and want to discover its title or artist.

Package Plans
AOL Radio offers the same packages as Slacker Radio; in fact, you can no longer listen to music without signing up for an AOL account. AOL Radio offers three listening plans for music fans. With the free, basic plan you can skip a maximum of six songs per hour and must listen to audio advertisements. Those ads may prove a minor annoyance to free account holders, but they're nothing compared to the ads that Spotify serve, which sometimes appear?mid-song.

The Slacker, err, AOL Radio Experience
The new AOL Radio is Slacker Radio with a few tweaks. If you have a Slacker Radio account, you also have an AOL Radio account. When I visited the site, I was automatically logged in with my Slacker Radio credentials. You can dive into the deep catalog by selecting one of more than two dozen pre-made stations or keying in an artist or song title into the search engine. If you go the search engine route, AOL Radio will cull a tightly-programmed station. I fine-tuned the experience by clicking the "Ban" icon to prevent a song from playing; clicking the heart-shaped "Favorite" icon gives a song extra weight, causing Slacker to play it more frequently. Clicking "My Stations" loaded my custom station without a hitch. Clicking the "Afropunk" play button launched my created station, sending Lenny Kravitz' "Always on the Run" to my ears.

AOL Radio differs from Slacker Radio in a few ways that may not be obvious to casual users. You can't, skip to the beginning of a track (effectively rewinding it), create playlists (though you can listen to playlists created on Slacker Radio's page), or shuffle tracks. Slacker Radio diehards may consider these deal-breakers that keep them returning to Slacker.com, but others may not notice the omissions.

Padcaster / Lenscaster lets you mount SLR lenses on iPad, we go hands-on at NAB (video)

http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/18/padcaster-lenscaster-ipad-SLR-mount-hands-on/

Think people look ridiculous shooting stills or video with an iPad? Try throwing an SLR lens into the equation as well. Manhattan Edit Workshop founder Josh Apter developed the Padcaster as an inexpensive solution for mounting an Apple iPad on a tripod. And why would you want to do such a thing? With 1080p video capture, built-in LTE and a on-board editing suite, such a device makes for an excellent on-the-go all-in-one, letting you shoot, cut and transmit video with a single package. One major aspect of visual storytelling that the tablet doesn't excel at, however, is emphasizing details with blurred backgrounds, along with magnifying your subject with optical zoom. Enter the Lenscaster. This universal lens mount lets you use a standard 35mm adapter to attach any SLR optic to the iPad camera, enabling a small variety of hardware-driven optical effects, including shallow depth of field, manual focus and a zoom option that doesn't result in detail loss.

Apter took the Padcaster and Lenscaster along on a demo shoot in New York City's Union Square, interviewing passersby with a Cinevate 35mm lens adapter, 85mm f/1.4 Carl Zeiss lens and a Sennheiser MKH-60 shotgun mic, all mounted to a Padcaster-equipped new iPad. The mounting duo may note be visually appealing from a physical perspective, but the resulting footage does look convincing -- you can see it in full after the break. The Padcaster's aluminum frame even doubles as a DSLR cage, letting you assemble a pro rig complete with camera, lens, mic and lights after removing the urethane iPad insert. The designer is also working on an iPad insert, though the tablet-sized contraption may prove to be overkill when paired with a pocketable smartphone. The Padcaster will be available soon for "about $200," while the Lenscaster attachment should ship for an additional 60 bucks. You'll also need to factor in a magnification optic to compensate for the distance between the iPad and the lens, along with a 35mm adapter, both of which are not included. The device is also unable to take full advantage of the iPad's resolution, creating black borders around the image, which you'll notice in the sample video, positioned just below our hands-on video right after the break.
