Samsung announces Galaxy S4 and Galaxy S4 Mini dual LTE network support

KOREAN PHONE MAKER Samsung has announced that it will launch dual-mode time division duplex (TDD-LTE) and frequency division duplex (FDD-LTE) LTE versions of its Galaxy S4 and Galaxy S4 Mini smartphones.

Samsung's popular Galaxy S4 handsets, like models from its competitors, have to deal with a multitude of LTE modes and frequencies. Now the firm has said that it will release Galaxy S4 and Galaxy S4 Mini handsets that support TDD-LTE and FDD-LTE and promise seamless handover of voice and data between the two types of networks.

According to Samsung, TDD-LTE will increase in popularity in the coming years and the firm said that its handsets will have the ability to switch between the widely deployed FDD-LTE networks and the emerging TDD-LTE networks. The firm added that mobile operators will be keen to make use of both networks to balance loads between FDD-LTE and TDD-LTE networks. This could mean that if enough smartphones have the ability to switch between the networks that might gain popularity with mobile operators as a way of saving cash on infrastructure.

Samsung co-CEO and president of its IT and Mobile division JK Shin said, "Samsung continues to accelearate global LTE market deployment, addressing technical challenges faster than anyone else. With today's TDD/FDD LTE seamless handover devices announcement, Samsung again demonstrates the company's commitment to driving better, more convenient customer experiences.

"The first commercially available TDD/FDD [LTE] seamless handover devices will allow customers to fully enjoy the benefits of fast mobile data communications no matter where they are."

While Samsung is pushing ahead with devices that are capable of future LTE deployments, Ofcom only finalised its plans to reuse 2G and 3G spectrum for 4G earlier this month. However the announcement highlights Samsung's ability to produce updated versions of its existing phones with bleeding edge features, unlike most of its rivals. ?

You Against The World ? The Most Important Home Improvement ...

When your home needs repairs, it can be stressful. If you are too poor to hire a professional to help you, the stress is intense. Time is also a consideration, and many people worry that they don?t have enough to see their projects to completion. However, here is where you are wrong. You do not need much time to do the home repairs that your home is begging for. The following tips will bring effective home improvement within your reach by teaching you strategies to complete projects quickly and efficiently.

When purchasing a home, hire a professional home inspector. This will help you know for sure if anything needs to be replaced or fixed if you buy the home, without relying on your own expertise or information from the seller. This professional will give an unbiased opinion to aid you in your home buying.

Be certain your air conditioner?s filters is kept clean. When it clogs, your unit will not be energy efficient. It can also hurt the unit in the long run. You should change your filter at least once a month to prevent buildup.

You just need two tips to make your ceiling seem higher. Paint stripes in the room or add a floor lamp that is tall. This will make an optical illusion that any eyes will follow. Your eyes are going to focus on the lines, and your ceilings will seem higher than they are.

Use the area between the rafters of your ceiling and the joists of your floor for storing building materials. A little effort goes a long way and you can store sections of molding and other longer building materials out of your way. All you have to do is nail furring strips along rafters or exposed floor joists and slide in the material that you want stored.

Don?t stress and do the proper research and you?ll have a better home before you know it. Follow the tips here to finish your DIY home improvement tasks quickly, easily and efficiently. This article has provided you with tips to make improving your home both easy and cheap. Best wishes to you in your home repair adventures.

Fix Up That Old Fixer Upper With These Tips | floorkitchenbath.com

TIP! It is a wise idea to consider the area you live in when you plan to make improvements to your home. A Victorian house is going to stand out blaringly on a block that only has saltbox cottages.

Such projects can boost your home?s value significantly. Doing updates, like renovations or additions, on your own can help you save money. Home improvement projects might even turn out to be a fun hobby. The tips in the following paragraphs, will help you get any project off to a good start.

TIP! On the rare chance that you find water leaking from under the sink or from under the tap, do not attempt to fix the leak yourself. Make sure you provide a catch for the leaking water, and then call a professional plumber.

If you find that water is leaking underneath your sink or from your tap refrain from attempting to fix it on your own. Just put a bucket or tray under the leak to prevent water damage and call a plumber to fix the leak.

TIP! Make sure you shop around to find good deals on anything you need for your home improvement project. Flooring of any type can cost a lot, especially if you?re looking at hardwood or tile.

Think about padding your furniture if you have small children. You can get protectors for the corners of your furniture from a store or just use tape made of foam. You should also be sure that any loose wiring is taped down, it can pose a choking hazard for young children.

TIP! Never underestimate how long a project could take or the potential issues that could cause it to take longer or cost more. Take a few minutes to create a detailed list of each and every project that must be done.

Adding distinctive touches to your walls can be done with simple three-dimensional tiles instead of purchasing generic pieces of artwork. Use three dimensional tiles in two colors such as green and white and arrange them on the wall (rotating colors) behind your couch for an original kind of art.

TIP! Any bedroom can look better through the use of throw pillows. Just take some old pieces of clothing with interesting patterns, cut and sew into a cool pillow cover.

You should always make sure your contractor is licensed and bonded. There are laws and regulations in every state for building contractors. This, of course, does not ensure that they will do a good job, but it does offer some protection from fraud. Most importantly, a contractor without a proper license is likely not carrying proper professional insurance, making them especially risky to work with.

TIP! After sitting on your chair pads for a long time, they become flat. However, you can breathe new life into those flattened cushions with a a little sunshine.

Glaze your bathrooms with something new to freshen their appearance. A fresh coat of glaze will help your bathroom look new. Replacing bathroom fixtures or floors can be quite costly, but glaze can only cost a couple hundred dollars. New glaze in the bathroom is a great way to add value without breaking the bank.

TIP! There are many things that can be used as artwork including three-dimensional tiles. For example, three-dimensional tiles can be used in alternating colors behind a sofa to create a one-of-a-kind art piece.

As much as a fifth of all heat and cool air in homes is lost through windows. Glazing your large windows can cut this leak in half, saving you money.

TIP! If you are looking at renovating your home by yourself compile a list of everything you need to complete the project, then have someone with experience take a look at it to make sure everything is right. When they correct you, you?ll save time AND money.

Installing wood, tile or carpeting in an entire space could prove to be quite costly. One easy and affordable option is to remove the existing flooring and stain the concrete. This option creates a modern look which is highly versatile when it comes to decorating.

TIP! Gutters can get clogged in the fall and winter, causing serious drainage issues in the summer. If you have a leak in your basement the first thing you should do is check your gutters, they could be clogged.

Many home builders install solid wood cabinets or cabinets made of particleboard which have no hardware in order to save on construction costs. Fortunately, these can be easily updated by purchasing knobs, handles, or drawer pulls at your local home improvement store or online. You can purchase any style or design of knobs that you wish and install them in a minutes.

TIP! Much of the heat or cooled air in your home is lost through the window glass. Glazing the larger windows in the home can reduce the amount of loss.

Insulate your plumbing to get ready for cold winter, or just to keep your water hot while it is running through the lines to your sink. Heat tape also works very well and is relatively easy to install, even if you?re a home improvement novice. It will prevent them from freezing and therefore needing to be replaced after the burst.

If you replace windows with ones which are more efficient, you can save money and get a better looking window. This is a very rewarding home improvement project.

TIP! A good way to make your home look good is to replace the door handles. You can easily do this under an hour.

Home improvement projects can make you feel good about your home and yourself. With these tips at hand, you can make good choices, find some great ideas and save yourself some money as well.

Valeant to cut jobs, move Bausch + Lomb HQ

Associated Press

Posted on July 29, 2013 at 2:02 PM

Updated today at 2:02 PM

NEW YORK (AP) ? Valeant says it will eliminate as much as 15 percent of its work force and move Bausch + Lomb's headquarters to New Jersey as part of its $8.7 billion acquisition.

In a letter to workers, Valeant says that after the deal closes, it will eliminate between 10 percent and 15 percent of positions companywide. That works out to between 1,850 and 2,775 people.

The Canadian drugmaker says it will remain based in Quebec, but it will move Bausch + Lomb's Rochester, N.Y. headquarters to New Jersey.

Valeant says it will continue to operate all of its current U.S. manufacturing locations, including those in Rochester. It added that it expects to receive regulatory approvals by early next month and hopes to close the deal as soon as possible after that.

Browns OL Ryan Miller sustains scary concussion

BEREA, Ohio (AP) ? As Ryan Miller lay motionless on the ground, shock and then fear spread through the Browns practice.

A few players near the spot where the backup offensive lineman went down dropped to a knee in prayer. The music system was turned off. All talking stopped and an eerie quiet filled Cleveland's indoor field house.

Suddenly, a routine day at training camp was anything but.

"Anytime your brother goes down it's scary," linebacker Quentin Groves said, "because you never know. ... We're just big men that play a sport called football. But we still have hearts. We still have emotions. We still have feelings. He's our brother."

Miller sustained a concussion during a one-on-one blocking drill Saturday, an injury that shook his teammates, who were later relieved to learn that the 6-foot-7, 320-pounder had been released from the Cleveland Clinic. Until getting word that Miller had movement in his extremities and was responsive, several of the Browns were worried Miller may have suffered a devastating injury.

"It's always tough to see your fellow linemen or one of your teammates go down like that," Pro Bowl tackle Joe Thomas said. "It's hard because obviously there are things more important than football and your health is certainly one of them. Sometimes it's hard to get back and focused on football when you see a guy laying there and not moving."

Miller, who is in his second NFL season, was immobilized, strapped to a backboard and taken by ambulance to the hospital after he was hurt. He spent several hours undergoing tests before he was released.

"He's doing well," first-year coach Rob Chudzinski said following practice. "He's responsive and it sounds like things are better at this point."

The Browns were about 40 minutes into their third practice, which was moved indoors because of rain and closed to the public, when Miller got hurt. He crumpled to the field and appeared to be unconscious on his back while most of teammates, who were unaware that he had been hurt, continued to take part in drills.

Groves realized something was seriously wrong and began alerting anyone he could.

"The way he was laying down, you know it was that serious," he said.

Moments after medical personnel rushed to aid the unmoving Miller, Chudzinski came over to check on him along with linebacker D'Qwell Jackson and others. After Miller was immobilized and strapped to a backboard, the entire Browns team and coaching staff huddled around him in prayer.

"We got together," said Chudzinski, Cleveland's first-year coach. "We said a prayer, said we would keep Ryan in our thoughts and I would give them updates as we got them. We needed to get back to work at that point and focus back on practice."

It was difficult for everyone.

The Browns asked media members not to report Miller's name until his family could be contacted, raising fears he was hurt more severely. And, as Miller was being treated, the team also requested for cameras be turned off to protect his privacy.

Meanwhile, Miller's teammates were hoping for the best.

"We play this game so hard, so violent," Groves said. "Any moment, this game could be taken away, and that's the thing I want guys to learn from this. Cherish the moments while you're out here. Cherish tying your cleats up. Cherish the smell of the grass. Cherish snapping that chinstrap on because any moment it can be taken away from you."

Chudzinski did not see how Miller got hurt, but Thomas said it was the result of helmet-to-helmet contact. It was not immediately known what defensive player Miller was blocking when he went down.

"Two helmets kind of hit the wrong way," he said. "It was kind of a freak thing."

After Miller was wheeled from the building, Chudzinski huddled his players and promised to give them an update when he got one. And about an hour later he got the news that the 24-year-old was "alert and awake."

"Anytime that happens you just pray and just hope for the best and hope everything is OK," Jackson said. "Coach gave us word that he is fine and that's a good thing. But those are the challenges and the scares that when you sign up for the game there's a possibility of something like that happening. I'll tell you what, it made everyone realize that at any moment anything can happen."

Chudzinski was proud of the way his team handled the difficult event.

"I thought they did a great job," he said. "It really says a lot about them, our coaches, our staff and our players to be able to do that. This team is a family and when something happens to a family member like that, it's tough. These guys did a great job of staying focused and getting a lot of work done that we needed to get done."

Miller was drafted by the Browns in the fifth round in 2012 out of Colorado. He appeared in eight games as a rookie, and got extended time in the fourth quarter of the season finale at Pittsburgh after John Greco sustained a knee injury. He was a four-year letter winner at Colorado, setting a school record with 48 career starts. He missed just two offensive plays over his final three seasons.

Thomas, who has become close to Miller, was thrilled to hear he was doing better.

"When we heard it was not neck-related, that was fantastic news and you feel great about that," he said. "He's a nice guy. He's real easygoing. He's a hard worker. He's really kind of a gym-rat type guy and him and I have become good friends in the last year for sure."

NOTES: DT Phil Taylor (calf strain) and TE Kellen Davis (knee strain) returned to practice on a limited basis. Taylor took part in individual drills and was held out of team sessions. ... OL Oneil Cousins will miss a "couple weeks" with a sprained ankle, Chudzinski said. ... The Browns will be in full pads for the first time Sunday. ... The Browns did some extensive work on screen passes, a staple of Chudzinski's offense.

Greenville County jail officials said the 42-year-old, whose real name is Earl Simmons, was arrested early Friday. He was also charged with not having a driver's license.

This was not Simmons first run in with the law.

Simmons was arrested last year in nearby Spartanburg County for suspicion of driving without a license. In that case, he was released after paying a fine.

Jail records show Simmons has been released. It wasn't clear if he has an attorney.

Simmons was arrested in a Phoenix suburb in 2011 after a trooper clocked him driving at 102 mph. He admitted to speeding but not going as fast as the Arizona police said. He sued the Arizona police.

In March 2000, DMX was arrested in Cheektowaga, New York. He pled guilty to a reduced charge of driving without a license, and was sentenced to 15 days in jail and fined $400. DMX served another jail sentence in 2001 for driving without a license and possession of marijuana. In 2008. DMX pled guilty to charges of drug possession, theft, and animal cruelty. He was sentenced to ninety days in jail on January 31, 2009. In 2010, DMX turned himself in to the Los Angeles Metropolitan Court for a reckless driving charge, he received in 2002. He was sentenced to serve ninety days in jail.

Man arrested over rape threats against Caroline Criado-Perez on Twitter

Police investigating rape threats against an anti-sexism campaigner are reviewing ?hundreds? of tweets for possible offences under the Malicious Communications Act, in what could become the first major test of new social-media guidelines for prosecutors.

On Sunday night a 21-year-old man was arrested in Manchester in connection with the barrage of hostile tweets.

Scotland Yard confirmed it had received a complaint from Caroline Criado-Perez, who was subjected to threats of sexual violence on Twitter, following her campaign for a woman?s face to appear on British banknotes.

She said that after it was announced that Jane Austen would appear on the new ?10 notes she began receiving ?about 50 abusive tweets an hour for about 12 hours?.?

A Metropolitan Police spokesman confirmed that detectives in Camden, north London, were investigating the allegations.

New guidelines were issued last month by the outgoing Director of Public Prosecutions, Keir Starmer, which established a ?higher threshold? for prosecuting cases involving electronic communications. The police had been criticised for taking an overzealous approach in the past.

A Twitter spokeswoman refused to say if it would hand over users? details, but added: ?We do have established processes for police to contact us to request user information.?

Italian parliament passes economic measures

ROME (AP) ? Italy's lower house passed a series of measures aimed at combatting the economic crisis after opposition lawmakers from Beppe Grillo's 5 Star Movement gave up on a two-day filibuster.

The obstructionist tactics by the anti-establishment 5 Star Movement sets the stage for a difficult two weeks for Premier Enrico Letta's uneasy coalition government. It aims to pass six decrees before September besides a raft of draft laws, including one opposed by Grillo's followers to allow the constitution to be amended. Parliament is set to recess Aug. 8.

The 117 measures passed Friday allow users to access public Wi-Fi points without identification, prohibits the seizure of primary residences and proposes a ceiling for the salaries of heads of public companies.

BEIRUT (AP) ? Talks between the Syrian government and a U.N. delegation tasked with investigating chemical weapons allegations in the nation's civil war have "resulted in an agreement on ways of moving forward," Syrian state media said Saturday.

President Bashar Assad's government invited a U.N. team to visit Damascus earlier this month after requesting that the international organization investigate an alleged chemical attack in Khan al-Assal, a village in the north. The Syrian regime and the rebels fighting to topple it accuse each other of using chemical agents in the March 19 incident.

Assad's government refused to have a possible inquiry include other alleged chemical attack sites in the central city of Homs, Damascus and elsewhere.

Earlier this week Swedish chemical weapons expert Ake Sellstrom and U.N. disarmament chief Angela Kane met with Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem and his deputy, Faisal Mekdad, in the Syrian capital.

A joint statement by the foreign ministry and the U.N. that appeared on Syria's official SANA news agency's website on Saturday said the meetings were "comprehensive and fruitful and resulted in an agreement on ways of moving forward."

It did not elaborate. The U.N. team couldn't immediately be reached for comment.

Khan al-Assal, on the southwestern edge of the embattled city of Aleppo, was under government control in March. It was captured by the rebels on Monday after weeks of heavy fighting between government troops and opposition forces who took large swathes of territory in the north ? including parts of Aleppo ? in an offensive last summer.

Saturday's announcement on an agreement on a possible U.N. probe of the March attack that killed 31 people in Khan al-Assal coincided with government allegations that the rebels committed "a massacre" in the village, killing "a number of civilians and military personnel," according to a SANA report. It did not give a death toll. The report said "terrorists" were behind the recent killings in Khan al-Assal, a term the government uses for rebels.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says at least 150 soldiers were killed on Monday and Tuesday, some after they had surrendered, during and after the rebel storming of Khan al-Assal.

The group, which relies on a network of activists on the ground inside Syria said at least 51 of the soldiers were shot dead after they were captured or had surrendered to rebels, the Observatory said Saturday. It said around 100 were killed when they tried to hold on to positions inside and around the village.

The Observatory's report could not be independently confirmed. Syria's official media does not release casualty figures for security forces and government soldiers.

In Aleppo, a rocket fired by government forces into a rebel-held district killed at least 18 people, including six children and four women, The Observatory said Saturday. The attack occurred a day earlier during government shelling of al-Qaida-linked rebel fighters in the Bab al-Nairab neighborhood of Aleppo. One of the rockets slammed into a residential area about 50 meters (yards) away from positions held by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, the Observatory said. At least another 50 people were wounded.

More than 100,000 people have been killed in the 2-year-old conflict, according to the U.N.'s recent estimate.

Reyn Schadt Cries After Hearing Herself For First Time With Cochlear Implant (VIDEO)

For the first 14 months of her life, Reyn Schadt's world was silent.

"Finding out that she had hearing loss was shocking. I really didn't know much about people with hearing loss," her mother, Courtney Schadt, told local Louisville, Ky., station WDRB. "I assumed that she would have to use sign language and that she might not be able to go to mainstream school."

Reyn is one of about 30,000 children born with a congenital virus called Cytomegalovirus each year. Her parents hoped for a miracle in the form of a cutting-edge cochlear implant -- a small device that connects with a child's auditory nerve and conveys auditory signals to the ear.

After months of work with Louisville audiologist Shelly Moats, the implant was switched on and Reyn's family waited for a reaction. Perhaps overcome by the unfamiliar sounds and sensations, little Reyn burst into tears. It worked.

Visit WDRB to learn how Reyn Schadt is doing now.

Reyn has become the latest in a string of similar success stories that have buoyed the hopes of cochlear implant advocates.

In a blog written for The Huffington Post in April, psychologists Roberta Michnick Golinkoff and Kathy Hirsh-Pasek note that these types of medical innovations have the ability to greatly improve the quality of life for children born with hearing problems but are often most effective if implemented before the child turns 2.

The family has been active in the Seminole community and in Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, with George and Suzanne Bessler participating as leaders for those and several other organizations.

Lilo was chosen as Rotarian of the Year because of the contri- butions she made to the club during its 2012-13 Rotary year.

Republican and Democratic leaders rush to condemn naughty party members

Standing behind the same lectern, on the same stage, before the same reporters in a Capitol Hill briefing room only moments apart on Thursday morning, House Speaker John Boehner, a Republican, and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, a Democrat, both needed to make something clear: Members of their own party have been bad, and no, they do not approve.

Pelosi addressed the Capitol Hill press corps first, where she fielded a question about the most recent saga of personal scandal from Anthony Weiner, a former Democratic House lawmaker now running to become New York City?s next mayor.

It was only two years ago that Pelosi stripped Weiner of his committee assignments in the House and urged him to leave Congress after he posted explicit pictures of himself on the Internet. (Weiner denied it at the time, claiming someone had ?hacked? his social media accounts. He was, curiously, unable to ?say with certitude? if the phallic images being splashed across the Internet were his own. Weiner?s story failed to hold up under scrutiny, and he stepped down in disgrace.) This week, after new pictures emerged on the website TheDirty.com, Weiner, who is married, admitted to misbehaving again, even after his public fall from grace.

Asked about the new pictures of Weiner, Pelosi looked physically perturbed that she still had to deal with him so long after his exit from the House, but she was unequivocal in her condemnation.

?Let me be very clear: The conduct of some of these people we?re talking about here is reprehensible,? Pelosi said. ?It is so disrespectful of women and what?s really startling about it is they don?t even realize ? they don?t have a clue ? if they?re clueless, get a clue. If they need therapy, do it in private.?

After answering a few more questions, Pelosi left the stage.

It was Boehner?s turn to be clear.

Although Republicans don?t have anyone in the their party advertising their bodies on the Web this week, one member did cause an uproar after making disparaging remarks about immigrant children.

During an interview with Newsmax last week, Iowa Republican Rep. Steve King, one of the fiercest opponents to the ongoing effort to pass an immigration overhaul, suggested that many immigrants who had been brought to the United States by their parents illegally as children would grow up to become drug smugglers.

"For everyone who's a valedictorian,? King said of children living in the United States illegally, ?there's another 100 out there who weigh 130 pounds ? and they've got calves the size of cantaloupes because they're hauling 75 pounds of marijuana across the desert.?

Not the best thing to say during a time when your party is making a deliberate and expensive campaign to bring more Hispanic Americans to vote Republican.

House leaders rushed to condemn King?s remarks, and Boehner reinforced his disapproval by bringing it up at his press conference.

?I want to be clear: There?s no place in this debate for hateful or ignorant comments from elected officials,? Boehner said. ?Earlier this week, Representative Steve King made comments that were, I think, deeply offensive and wrong. What he said does not reflect the values of the American people or the Republican Party. We all need to do our work in a constructive, open and respectful way. As I?ve said many times, we can disagree without being disagreeable.?

With that out of the way, perhaps leaders of both parties will get back to governing.

Perhaps.
