Omega-3, disease prevention | Revista Women's Health

In recent decades there have been numerous epidemiological studies and trials on the effect of consumption of Omega-3 fatty acids on health of human populations and clinical patients.

They suggests a beneficial effect of omega-3 consumption, so it is recommended in the diet increase at the expense of saturated fats and / or unsaturated Omega-6. Their functional effects are taken into account as a nutritional aid in the treatment of diseases and clinical nutrition formulations.

Benefits of Omega-3

The Omega-3 fatty acids have an important role in preventing cardiovascular disease, reducing risk factors associated with these diseases, they have an antithrombotic effect, anti-inflammatory and vasodilator.

Consumption of Omega-3 lowers LDL cholesterol, VLDL and triglycerides.

Its action on eicosanoid metabolism, Omega-3 influence on coagulation, reducing platelet aggregation and prolonging bleeding time.

They also decrease the systolic and diastolic blood pressure in both normotensive and hypertensive people, this effect is associated with changes in the fatty acids of erythrocytes and cell membranes.

Polyunsaturated fatty acids in general have anti arrhythmic, this effect being more marked in the Omega-3 than omega-6.

They have a modulatory action on inflammatory factors by which we have studied its benefits in diseases with a chronic inflammatory component such as rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn?s disease and ulcerative colitis.

They have shown improvement of symptoms in these patients as well as longer battery life during periods of remission of symptoms, reducing the use of anti-inflammatory drugs.

In type 2 diabetic patients the Omega-3 may help improve insulin resistance and balance the diet by reducing the consumption of saturated fatty acids.

Epidemiological studies show a relationship between the consumption of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids Omega-3 with a decrease in the expression of the breast, colon and prostate. In vitro studies have found that omega-3 are capable of reducing the growth of various human cancer cells and increased apoptosis.
