PFT: Female ref to make season debut in Detroit

Tennessee Titans v Tampa Bay BuccaneersGetty Images

As announced by the NFL, the return to practice by a player who lands on injured reserve with the ?Designated for Return? label did not mention a limited window for placing the player on the 53-man roster or returning him to IR for the bulk of the season.? As explained to NFLPA-certified agents, the new rule applies a three-week up-or-out period after the player on IR returns to practice.

Specifically, agents have been informed that a player who returns to practice after missing at least six weeks with a ?major injury? may practice for up to 21 days.? If at the conclusion of the 21st day the player has not been added to the 53-man roster, he cannot return to the 53-man roster for the rest of the season.

It?s similar to the procedure the NFL applies to players who start the season on the Physically Unable to Perform List or the Non-Football Illness/Injury list.? Those players must miss the first six weeks of the regular season.? They then have a three-week window to return to practice.? Once they return to practice, they have a three-week window for activation to the roster.

There are two important differences.? The six-week period for players injured after training camp has opened begins from the moment the player lands on IR, which means that the six-week period can expire, in theory, before Week Six.? Also, there?s no deadline for bringing the player back to practice.? It can happen any time after the six-week period ends.? Also, the player can return to game action any time after the eight-week period ends.

It?s a minor detail, but it could be an important factor to consider when a team decides to bring a player on IR back to practice.? Once he?s back, he has only 21 days to be activated.

California lawmakers set to approve pension reforms

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - California lawmakers were poised to pass a sweeping pension reform measure and a flurry of other bills on Friday as they prepared to break until after the fall elections.

The pension law, unveiled by Governor Jerry Brown on Tuesday after months of talks with fellow Democrats who control the legislature, would put new limits on pensions for future state and local government to save tens of billions of dollars in retirement-related spending.

Brown intends to promote those savings to help sell voters on his November measure to raise the state's sales tax and boost income taxes on wealthy Californians. Revenue from the measure would prevent further immediate cuts in spending on education programs and bolster the state's finances in coming years.

The tax measure has a modest lead in polls but support for tax initiatives in the California typically wanes as election day nears. Brown needs to hammer home to voters how he has tackled pressing fiscal concerns to rally them behind tax increases, analysts say.

Pension costs are one of those concerns--and not just in California. State and local governments around the country have struggled with lean revenue, requiring them to slash spending on services but at the same time honor promises to retirees.

Brown and top Democrats hailed the reforms in the legislation to be voted on Friday. The California Public Employees' Retirement System, the largest U.S. public pension fund, said the plan could cut $40 billion to $60 billion in pension expenses for government employers over 30 years.

Public employee unions panned the agreement, complaining that Democrats who are routinely their legislative allies had sold them out by agreeing to the proposal.

But others said the changes do not go far enough, noting they do not include Brown's proposal for "hybrid" pensions combining features of traditional pensions and 401(k)-style retirement accounts.

"I hope people acknowledge there is much, much more work to be done," said Joe Nation, a former Democratic member of the state Assembly who now teaches public policy at Stanford University. "It's better than moving backwards but this barely moves the ball forward."

Nation in recent years has overseen studies warning California and its local governments face unfunded pension liabilities that stretch into the hundreds of billions of dollars.

Pension costs are contributing to the financial hardship that pushed Stockton and San Bernardino, two sizeable California cities, to file for bankruptcy this year.

Tackling unfunded pension liabilities will require changes that effect the retirement benefits of current public-sector employees, not just the future employees targeted in the bill, according to Nation.

"Because we are so under water right now there just really has to be more," Nation said.

California lawmakers must vote on the pension bill by midnight Friday, the close of the legislative session.

The legislation will require new public-sector workers to split payments to their pension accounts at least evenly with employers.

Current employees would also be responsible for half their contributions as talks phase in higher payments. Savings to the state from its employees paying more toward their pensions will be used to reduce its unfunded pension liability.

The legislation also will raise retirement ages for new employees and impose new formulas for calculating pensions. That will leave the newly hired with less generous benefits than current workers.

The legislature will also be considering a workers-compensation reform measure.

Moscow's Hotel Metropol sold at auction

MOSCOW (AP) ? Michael Jackson slept there. Vladimir Lenin harangued Bolsheviks there. Over the past century, the Hotel Metropol has seen the extremes of Russian life, from austere revolutionary fervor to flashy pop indulgence.

The hotel was sold Thursday for $275 million ? slightly more expensive than the starting price of $272 million ? after an auction organized by the Moscow city government as part of its privatization program. The amount was expected to get much higher ? in steps of 435 million rubles ($13.6 million).

The buyer was Azimut, a major Russian hotel chain that rented the Metropol from the Moscow city government, Russian media reported.

Moscow, with a perpetual shortage of hotel rooms and a business culture that adores ostentation, is an attractive market for high-end hoteliers and the Metropol offers plenty of curb-flash.

Situated catty-corner from the Bolshoi Theater and an easy stroll from Red Square, the location is prime for any guest who wants to feel in the very center of the city's heaving action.

It's one of Moscow's most distinctive buildings as well, a cheery Art Nouveau confection in a city where buildings mostly seem to glower. Although at six stories it's one of the city center's more low-rise structures, it stands out with sinuous curves, friezes of women en deshabille and bands of brightly colored majolica tiles. Several elaborate mosaics top the building, the most noted being Mikhail Vrubel's "Princess of Dreams," showing a dying knight sailing through a crashing sea to a vision of his beloved.

Then, there's the historical cachet. When it opened in 1901, it was a paragon of Russians' growing prosperity and confidence, but 17 years later took on a far different role. When Bolsheviks decided to move their government from St. Petersburg to Moscow, the hotel was appropriated to become the Second House of the Soviets.

A large plaque on the exterior notes that in 1918-19, Lenin "many times gave reports and speeches at sessions and party congresses" in the hotel and chatted there with members of the "prodotryad," armed squads of workers who forcefully appropriated food from the bourgeoisie. Another plaque commemorates a 1921 meeting in the hotel that resulted in a friendship agreement with Mongolia.

In the chaos of World War II, the Metropol became home and office for almost all the foreign journalists allowed to work in the USSR. "Gloomy and cavernous, Mother Metropol was like a college fraternity house" during that time, Whitman Bassow wrote in his book "The Moscow Correspondents."

The auction winner will get all that, but won't get the hotel's elaborate array of antique furnishings and paintings. How much of that might be available for separate purchase is unclear. Natalya Bocharova, head of the city property department, said this month that an array of objects from the hotel will be turned over to museums.

The furnishings are a major part of the hotel's appeal. Jackson, during a 1993 stay, reportedly was so enamored with a lamp featuring a bear figure that he agitated unsuccessfully to buy it.

Despite its storied history and reputation, hotel review websites suggest the Metropol's rooms often are in need of spiffing up. Tikova said privatization should ensure the hotel gets an upgrade.

"It allows for more efficient management, it allows timely renovations," she said.

Awesome Sauce

Roma tomatoes.

Roma tomatoes are perfect for paste.

iStockphoto/Thinkstock.

One of the consolations of these miserable dog days of summer is the abundance, in gardens and markets across the land, of ripe tomatoes; a season of suffering, sweating, and involuntary naps seems to be the price nature exacts on us for perfection in her fruits. If you have a garden, even a small one, it can be tough to stay on top of things during the high times. A dozen ripe tomatoes can go to rot with alarming speed, and although stuffing your face to save your tomatoes from decay is about as much fun as sex for the sole purpose of procreation, you may nonetheless find yourself grimly dishing out tomato breakfasts, tomato lunches, tomato dinners; gorging robotically on salsa, salad, caprese, BLTs, cold tomato soup .... There is a better way to deal with your excess, and it's not canning. (Come on?there?s no way you?re going to can all those tomatoes.) It's called ?cooking them.?

I don't have any hard numbers on how Americans consume their tomatoes, but I feel safe in conjecturing that by and large we eat the fresh ones raw and cook the canned ones. This at least was one of my best practices, a bit of uninterrogated conventional wisdom that I followed until recently, when my garden produced a sudden glut of Roma tomatoes. I'd always found Romas to be too mealy and bland for fresh eating, so I had no qualms about chopping them up to make a quick, simple sauce. I sliced a couple cloves of garlic?ineptly, with none of the Goodfellas-in-jail precision of Paul Sorvino?started them saut?ing in olive oil, added the tomatoes with a pinch of salt and sugar and then, like a bad cook, left the kitchen and went about my business.

When I returned after sending some emails, my bog-standard Romas had been transformed into one of the best sauces I?d ever tasted: a thick, rich paste with a tanginess that set my head vibrating. I hadn't done anything other than leave the room, but the results were superior, in all imaginable ways, to anything I'd ever made with more care and attention (not to mention seasoning) using canned tomatoes. More remarkable than the flavor was the texture, thick and viscous, almost chewy. I turned to Harold McGee's On Food and Cooking for an explanation: It turns out calcium salts, an additive that keeps canned tomatoes from being pummeled to a mush during processing and shipping, also prevent them from disintegrating so lusciously when cooked.

So, yes, you should cook your garden tomatoes, though there is a hitch: Not all of them will respond as magically to heat. But identifying the right ones is easy. For our purposes, there are two kinds of tomatoes: paste tomatoes (the ones you should make sauce out of) and non-paste tomatoes. All the other overlapping categories?determinate, indeterminate; stuffer, slicer, griller; beefsteak, cherry, globe?are irrelevant. Any tomato that is elongated is probably a paste tomato, as is any with plum or (naturally) paste in its name. Romas are paste tomatoes, which explains why fresh ones taste so mediocre, even at their peak of ripeness. Like all paste tomatoes, Romas are simply not meant to be eaten raw. They were created, through breeding, to be cooked.

The parent of most modern paste tomatoes is Italy's long-established San Marzano. Tomato pro Amy Goldman reckons the San Marzano is ?the most important industrial tomato of the 20th century,? as its commercial introduction in 1926 provided canneries with a sturdy, flawless subject, and breeders with genes they?d be raiding for decades. The canning industry eventually replaced the San Marzano with blander hybrids that had better resistance to disease and rot and were easier to harvest by machine; meanwhile, the Agriculture Department crossed the San Marzano with two other varieties (one of them itself a San Marzano crossing) and, in the mid-1950s, introduced the Roma tomato.

Pretty much everyone with an opinion on the matter believes the San Marzano is still unsurpassed for cooking, canning, and preserving. This is certainly the position of the country of Italy, which conferred on the San Marzano a ?protected designation of origin? status, such as is also enjoyed by Stilton cheese and the sparkling wines of the Champagne region. (This doesn't mean you can't grow San Marzanos in your backyard. You can.) Such reverence for a fruit that tastes unremarkable when eaten raw shows again (as though further proof were necessary) the genius of Italian cuisine. Meanwhile, our own hemisphere, the birthplace of the tomato, has generally been flummoxed by the paste tomato?s split personality. As Goldman recounts in The Heirloom Tomato, an 1886 Burpee seed company catalog reported that the King Humbert, a close relative of the San Marzano, ?was liked by many, while by others ... considered 'of no account.' ?

Have you been fed up with watching movies with same exact plot and it is predictable ending? Well you will find internet short stories that you can watch just by logging into sites to a website that feeds such clips. Method . web series.

web series - They're group of episodes released through the internet plus some released by the newly adapted medium called web television. Each demonstration of these series called episode is visible every following your previous air time.

Almost all of us are more likely engaged with video streaming particularly when we have seen them very interesting. Approximately roughly 80percent of Internet surfers view web videos every now and then. The percentage of web viewers is expected to increase to approximately greater than 90percent within a couple of years or less. Web videos are so much captivating how the audiences are sharing them with colleagues, friends, and also families using social media.

The popularity of those series may be rising as it started making use of their all new discovered concept in movie making. Legal Fight with Florida Unions Costs Taxpayers Nearly $500,000 ...

Most people would be thankful if they only had to pay three percent of their salary toward retirement. That would be considered a gift in the private sector. But to Florida?s government employees, it?s a crime and an insult. That?s why the unions have filed a lawsuit, forcing the Florida Department of Management Services to rack up a whopping $499,288 in legal fees (thus far) to defend a new law requiring government employees to pay a paltry three percent towards their state pensions. Unsurprisingly, the unions won the first round in court. There is always a politically-friendly judge ? perhaps even one on the union donor list ? ready to lend a hand in a time of crisis. Now the state?s Supreme Court will decide the matter. The unions, led by the Florida Education Association, successfully argued that making employees pay anything ?violated the contract between the state and current employees.? But the unions weren?t done. The FEA have also filed a lawsuit challenging new laws dictating how teachers are evaluated and compensated. That case has yet to be heard in court, but the state has already spent $3,354 on legal fees and the meter continues to run. Not only do unions make public schools very expensive to operate, but they also make any type of pro-student reform very expensive to implement. Perhaps heavily unionized governments should adopt the motto: ?Damned if you reform, damned if you don?t.?

Australian football youth development | The Roar

Following Australia?s performance at the Olympics, which some say was less than acceptable, the head of the Australian Olympic Committee John Coates has advocated for increased spending on grassroots sports.

This is in line with the 2009 Crawford Report, which also advocates for increasing the proportion of total monies allocated to grassroots sports.

This is not a controversial idea, and one that perhaps most Australians would also support. Indeed, sports participation has many physiological and psychosocial benefits for young people.

Recently, Craig Foster has suggested that football is in a better position than most other sports to drive an initiative that is aimed at increasing the number and experience of youth sport participants.

Football has 360,000 participants nationwide from the ages of 5-14, thus making it the number one participation sport in the country for boys and number six for girls.

Further, FIFA, unlike any other major sporting body, has systematically undertaken scientific research which demonstrates the significant health benefits that are derived from football participation. These include positive effects on fitness, strength, skeletal health, self-esteem, social skills and quality of life.

The FFA has worked hard over recent years to overhaul the ?system? of youth football in Australia. Certainly the advances made by way of small-sided-games and the national curriculum have been substantial. However, these changes have served the sole purpose of generating players with a higher technical and tactical proficiency.

The ultimate aim, of course, is to have better players competing at a higher level, thereby lifting Australia to be one of the top footballing countries worldwide.

More importantly we have to ask how have these changes served to increase the positive experiences of our young footballers? How have they served to maintain and increase the participation base of football to ensure its competitive advantage in this space? And, how have they served the physiological and psychosocial development of young players?

The changes that have been made to the education of coaches in Australia epitomise the overhauls made by the FFA ?system-wide?. The community coach education courses have been enhanced through the addition of a coherent framework of technical and tactical education.

Thus coaches are able to produce more highly skilled and tactically astute players (assuming, of course, that the coach can actually pass on this information to players).

However, coaching is never this simple. Indeed, by maintaining a focus on technical and tactical knowledge, our coach education courses leave coaches absolutely unprepared to facilitate any meaningful personal gains for young athletes.

Where is the information on how to build a meaningful positive relationship with a young player? Where is the information on athlete development and skill acquisition?

Where is the information on communication and leadership?

These glaring omissions reinforce the narrow focus of the FFA at the exclusion of all else.

No coach ? young or old ? could ever walk away from a community coaching course feeling prepared to handle a team of young players. How do they deal with misbehaviour? How do they deal with bullying? How do they deal with the parents?

These questions remain unanswered in the service of trying to develop ?better? players.

But let?s face the truth, until coaches can be taught the necessary skills within the coach education system, Australia will reap no reward in terms of increasing its participant base, providing a better experience for young players, or (given that coaches will have no idea about how to teach the technical and tactical knowledge that they receive) even more skillful players.

The FFA must get this right. However, this will require a change of mindset. A change of philosophy. Great players, and great footballing nations, are not built solely and technically and tactical proficiency. They are built on a football culture.

The FFA needs to change the goal posts and realise that overhauling the ?system? can only be an overwhelmingly positive thing when those changes serve the vast majority of footballers in this country ? the young participants ? who will go on to form the backbone of Australia?s footballing culture in the years to come.

I can never forget that day, which changed my life. It was 20 October 2011. Intraday trading was new concept for me. I was excited about trading in Stock market. It?s just been one week I had entered in Stock Market and I was trying to understand how to trade in Stock Market.

I always observe rushing my friend in cafeteria to finish his breakfast before 9.15 am (Time to start Indian Stock Market). He was young, Smart and Intelligent, he use to monitor stock market?s Update very closely and use to explain me? ?See this stock will definitely fall or will rise now?..? and to my surprise it use to happen most of the time.

I started thinking, why not I should open a demat account and use his talent and earn some extra four to five thousand per month. I had 1 lakh rupee in my saving account and opened a demat account with ICICI bank on 12th October 2011 and by 19th October my account was active to place Buy or Sell order in Stock Market for Intraday Trading, Future and Options and for delivery calls

I thought from 20th October I will start my trading, but unfortunately I was sick on that day and I could not go to office, I did Lakshmi Pooja in the morning and I decided to watch CNBC awaz & take advise from my friend over phone. I was not sure how to place a trade, I called my friend and he explained me over phone, by 10 am I got a call from my friend ? hey Raju, there is a stock named M and B switch listed today, you take a sell call on it at current market price, Hurry !!!?. He hanged up immediately, I could only note Stock name ?M and B switch gear? but I did not notice his other information. I read in books and had heard my father saying me all the time ?Little knowledge is always danger?, but I did never take his words sincerely.

I bought the stock at Current market Price,135 and I bought in margin because i was very confident on my friend?s suggestion and like every trader I also wanted to earn more :-) ),I traded for Stock worth 5 lakhs. After 10 minutes, my Friend called ?hey Raju, did you take Sell call on that stock, I said yes I took at 135?. Actually I did a mistake, he asked me to take sell call but I took Buy call on that stock because I did not know how to sell a stock. My father called me and asked me to get ready for medical checkup, I did not reveal about my trading to my father as he is totally against of Investing in stock market. He always use to suggest me to invest in LIC, do some Fixed Deposit or buy some Gold. That day I was not willing to move away from my computer screen. My friend has told me that, if stock falls we will be in profit and by the time i was about to leave for doctor, stock came down to 122 and I was very happy and Informed my friend that my father is insisting me to see doctor.

He assured me that he will keep me updated with the stock update. I was very excited that I have made Rs 13 profit on each share but I was not aware that I am actually in loss of Rs 13 per share as I had taken Buy call.

somehow I forgot my cell in front of my computer while leaving home for hospital, on the way I realized that I am not having my cell phone with me. Father saw me in tense and asked me if i am feeling uneasy. I could not reveal him anything and I had not stored my friend cell number in my diary to dial up from my father?s cell phone.

The M and B switch ? this stock fall down till 118 and then suddenly moved till 181, My friend was trying to reach me continuously to come out of the stock but he was not getting any response, finally My Mom lifted the call and she gave my father?s cell number to contact me.

My friend called me and asked me to exit from the stock as soon as possible, he told the stock moved to 200 and he lost nearly Rs 80,000. I was shocked; I cannot explain my situation in words. The worse thing was yet to happen, I was not aware of my demat account?s User Id, so that I could have asked my fried to login on my behalf.

I was shocked and lifeless, I was thinking of the plans I had for coming days. I was cursing myself for taking a decision to start trading. I had planned for my dream Bike that I wanted to buy, I remembered Rs 10,000 which i had to return to one of my friend and many more. My friend was trying to console me that the stock might slip sharply.

I called ICICI direct (demat) customer care and requested him to help me, they seemed helpless as I was not sure with my account related information, I asked them what will happen if i am not able to come out of the stock by my own, they said that demat account will sell/buy your stock by 3.15 pm automatically if traded in margin. (I had traded in margin.)
The stock was at Rs 330, by 3 Pm. My friend called me and said sorry, I understood I lost all my savings. I was praying to God for some miracle and was cursing me on taking decision to enter in intraday trading.

I reached home at 4 Pm and My friend was waiting for me at my home, I wanted to hit him hard but ? My mother tried to ask about my well being but i did not care of her word and made a quick move to start my computer. My friend asked me to check the balance.

IT WAS RS 12,76,000. I COULD NOT BELIEVE ON MY EYES AND IT FILLED WITH TEARS. TEARS OF HAPPINESS?My friend could not understand how can it be possible.
Stock market had surprised me

Manchester Airport and Manchester Airport Parking Centre.com are Gearing up for Thousands of Weekend Visitors

Europe?s biggest Aviation and Transport Fair will land at Manchester Visitor Park this weekend, bringing thousands of enthusiasts with it.

(PRWEB) August 27, 2012

Manchester Airport is home to the retired super-jet Concorde and it is in its impressive shadow the fourth annual Manchester Airport Aviation and Transport Fair is set to take place.

This unique exhibition sees visitors from home and away gathering, to set eyes on some of the most interesting planes, trains and automobiles on display, some even travelling from far flung places such as Dubai, Germany and Switzerland.

Societies, traders, fans and collectors will spend time under the giant wings of Concorde, while vintage memorabilia like; models, steam engines, timetables, posters and thousands more collectibles sells to deserving buyers.

Examples of some of the things on offer would be: A collection of sick bags thankfully unused, from airlines that are only with us in spirit like the famed Pan Am and defunct Laker Airways, cutlery sets, captains hats, paintings, autographed memorabilia and even a spare Concorde engine, from Olympia which is valued at around ?1 million.

Collectors and traders will be able to find the sublime to the ridiculous at this event, and pick up an item worth ?5 or ?500,000 the possibilities are endless.

Also inside the hangar will be full-scale model railways, a giant (working) Scalextric track and demonstrations of Air Navigation Radar equipment.

This is not just an air and rail exhibit though and outside the hangar will be overrun by over 200 classic cars, some so old they were produced in 1914. These will be displayed for visitor?s perusal around the Park, along with a diesel train engine, vintage fire trucks, novelty hot air balloons, and military vehicles that have served in both, Afghanistan and Iraq, as well as Vietnam.

There is so much on display at the event that it would be impossible to list everything but it is worth noting that beloved children?s author Steve Burnside will be in attendance along with his popular character, Fergus the Tractor, to keep the kids amused while parents explore the UK Cockpit Club?s display of vintage flight decks.

Along with the Manchester Airport Aviation and Transport Fair, the public will be able to visit The Runway Visitor Parks permanent exhibits-with access to not only the Concorde but also an RAF Nimrod, Trident airliner and many, many more and the chance to watch planes taking off from Manchester Airport, with running commentary from one of the Air Traffic Controllers.

Entry is only ?2 per person, and children under-14 get in to the fair and all exhibits for free. Money will be raised across the two days of the fair and be donated to charities including; Child Flight, St Anne?s Hospice and Help for Heroes.

People coming to visit can take advantage of Manchester Airport Parking Centre and book the cheapest long-term parking, or hotels with parking, near the airport. By using this service visitors are guaranteed the best value for money, accommodation close to the exhibits and Fair and the use of a shuttle bus to the Runway Park. Parking at the Visitor Park will cost ?3 an hour, but the parking centre can find you long-term airport parking for as little as ?4 a day.

The Manchester Airport Aviation and Transport Fair starts Saturday the 14th of July at eight in the morning, and will end at eight thirty on the night of Sunday the 15th of July. Those planning on using the parking centre should book now to save even more money on parking.

Anti-Obama doc highlights weak Hollywood newcomers

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Hollywood may have run out of summer hits, but an anti-Obama documentary is helping to fill the gap.

Holdover movies easily topped the weekend box office again, led by Sylvester Stallone's "The Expendables 2" at No. 1 for the second-straight weekend with $13.5 million.

The weekend's new wide releases were overshadowed by "2016: Obama's America," which expanded from limited to nationwide release and took in $6.2 million to finish at No. 8.

The documentary is a conservative critique of what the country would look like four years from now if President Barack Obama is re-elected.

Released by Rocky Mountain Pictures, "Obama's America" nearly matched the $6.3 million debut of the No. 7 movie, Joseph Gordon-Levitt's action tale "Premium Rush," a Sony release that played in more than twice as many theaters as the Obama documentary.

The weekend's other new wide releases opened weakly. Dax Shepard and Kristen Bell's road-chase comedy "Hit & Run," released by Open Road Films, debuted at No. 10 with $4.7 million, and the Warner Bros. fright flick "The Apparition" opened at No. 12 with $3 million.

The weak openings are typical of late August, a dumping ground for movies without much audience appeal as the summer blockbuster season winds down and young viewers switch to back-to-school mode.

But with less competition from Hollywood releases, it also opens the door for surprise successes such as "Obama's America."

"It's extremely rare for a documentary to break into the top-10, but August can be a land of opportunity for smaller films," said Paul Dergarabedian, box-office analyst for Hollywood.com. "Also, there's the fact that this is a very conservative film. Normally, it's Michael Moore-branded documentaries, the liberal documentaries that make all the money."

"Obama's America" opened in a handful of theaters in mid-July and did strong business as it gradually widened to more cities. It jumped into the top-10 this weekend as it expanded into 1,091 theaters, leading all other wide releases with an average of $5,717 a cinema.

That's a solid average, especially for a political documentary. But it pales next to the king of political documentaries, Moore's George W. Bush assault "Fahrenheit 9/11," which opened at No. 1 with $23.9 million in June 2004, averaging $27,558 in 868 theaters. "Fahrenheit 9/11" went on to become the top-grossing documentary ever with $119.1 million domestically.

"Obama's America" is based on the book "The Roots of Obama's Rage," written by Dinesh D'Souza, who co-directed the movie with John Sullivan.

The documentary now has climbed to a $9.1 million domestic total, with prospects for strong business as the Republican National Convention unfolds over the next few days.

D'Souza said Sunday that "Obama's America" will expand to more cities in the coming weeks and probably remain in theaters until early October, likely followed by a DVD release in the homestretch leading up to the Nov. 6 election.

Conservatives probably account for most of the documentary's audience so far, D'Souza said. But as with "Fahrenheit 9/11," which drew many conservatives out of curiosity, the attention "Obama's America" now is receiving could prompt left-leaning viewers to check it out, he said.

"What's happening is that people are really hungry for new information about Obama. There really is this sense that he remains an elusive figure," D'Souza said. "Then there's a second sense that the American dream is in the balance, the American dream is at stake, and that gives people a sense of anxiety about where the country is going."

Released by Lionsgate, "The Expendables 2" raised its domestic total to $52.3 million after two weekends.

In limited release, IFC Films' "Sleepwalk with Me" had a huge debut with $77,400 in a single New York City theater. Produced and co-written by Ira Glass of National Public Radio's "This American Life," ''Sleepwalk with Me" stars writer-director Mike Birbiglia in a semi-autobiographical story of a stand-up comic struggling with career and romance, along with bad bouts of sleepwalking.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

1. "The Expendables 2," $13.5 million ($18.5 million international).

2. "The Bourne Legacy," $9.3 million ($9.4 million international).

Galaxy Note II specs leak ahead of IFA unveiling

Samsung (005930) isn?t going to let a loss hold it down, and the company looks ready to take the wraps off the sequel to its popular supersized Galaxy Note smartphone later this week. While we wait for the Galaxy Note II to get official, the full specs have seemingly been revealed by Seoul Newspaper. The big details all appear to line up with earlier reports, which suggested the Note II will include a 5.5-inch Super AMOLED display, a 1.4GHz quad-core Exynos processor and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. The report says the phone will include an 8-megapixel camera instead of the 12-megapixel shooter that had been rumored, however, and it also suggests that the phone will include 4G LTE connectivity and either 16GB or 32GB of internal storage. The Galaxy Note II is expected to be announced during Samsung?s IFA press conference on August 29th.

Total Vibration ? Blog Archive ? Several Ways To Get Your Financial ...

Finances can be scary, but money is a daily essential. This article contains advice which will help you to regain control of your finances.

Plan your budget based on what you spend vs. how much you make. It is important to figure out your income after taxes. Make sure you include all forms of income that you receive, whether they are from rental properties or a second job. Your expenses should be less than your income.

After that, you need to write down all of your household expenses in list form. Take the time to include everything, such as car maintenance, food costs and amounts you spend when you head out for a night. Make sure that this list reflects all of the money you spend.

Be sure to use real numbers when making a budget. You will find that you have unneeded expenses that you can probably eliminate. Simple things like bringing your own coffee from home can make a huge difference.

To decrease your utility bills, upgrade the systems that you are using. You can cut the cost of your power bill by updating your windows or replacing your hot water heater. A hot water heater can also make a difference in your bill. To lower a water bill, check for any leaky pipes, and have a plumber come out and fix any that you find. Be sure to only use your dishwasher when it is full.

Swap old, inefficient appliances for those that use less energy. This may seem costly, but it saves money over time. Unplug the electrical cords from any appliances or electronics that are not being used. Over time, you will see a difference in utility costs.

To make sure that you are not losing heat because of your roof or insulation, upgrade these areas, especially if this is something that you have not done in a long time. You will definitely get a return for your investment with this upgrade.

When you use these tips, you will be able to cut down on your expenses and save more money. Spend the money you have saved on home improvement projects on new appliances you need. You will be able to live more comfortably and make better plans for the future.

Simple Tips For The Do It Yourselfer Home Improvement | Marijuana ...

If you encounter any plumbing or electrical work that must be done, stop and contact a professional. These are two areas of home improvement that you should never attempt to do yourself if you aren?t properly trained and educated. Working on these areas of the home on your own could cause a mishap that costs much more than getting a professional to do it for you right the first time.

Before you try to tackle a professional project like a plumbing or electrical issue on your own, get a professional estimate first. If the issue is a small one, then chances are you can afford the bill. If the issue is a large one then chances are you aren?t qualified to handle it anyway. Trying to do these projects on your own will often lead to more damage and even injury.

If you have a lot of home improvement projects on your list, remember to pace yourself through it all. If you are trying to do everything all at once, you could become very overwhelmed and even slack up on the quality that is given to each project. Taking each project one at a time will ensure that you complete each perfectly and without too much stress on you.

For the easiest modern touch to the home, consider using wallpaper. Wallpaper these days can offer quite modern and funky designs, which can generate a great update for your home. This can give you a great look for the home with less effort than painting.

When thinking about home improvements, think green! It?s a great way to add value as well as to be environmentally friendly. Putting in an energy efficient furnace or air conditioning will not only make your living space more comfortable, but also save you money and keep the earth cleaner longer.

When you are updating your home do it one room at a time. Taking on too much do it yourself home improvement at one time can be stressful, create a mess within your home, and perhaps burn you out. You can save yourself time and money by taking it one step at a time.

Whenever you are doing an electrical home improvement job, overestimate the number of sockets each room needs. No matter how generous your plans are, an extra duplex outlet in most rooms will prove itself a wise investment over and over. When it comes to your home?s resale value, ?there are too many plugs in here? is a phrase home buyers never say.

When it comes to home improvement, go with your gut feeling about the contractor as long as everything else matches up. Do not even consider someone that you do not fully trust, as you probably have that feeling for a reason. If you have a hint of mistrust toward the contractor that you meet with, it may only lead to anger and mistrust on an exponential level if things do not go according to plan.

Make sure that you and your contractor are on the same page regarding your budget for the project. Be honest with your contractor regarding the amount of money you have to spend, don?t hide the wiggle room that you built into the budget. Many homeowners fear that they will get taken advantage of, but if you are not honest, you may find yourself having received inferior materials or workmanship because the contractor was trying to cut the costs to fit your budget.

Here is an idea! To call attention to pieces of your furniture and accessories that are brown or purple, place them against a white backdrop. This is especially great if you live in an apartment and are unable to paint your room a different color other than white. Utilize this color and create a space full of personality through the use of a brown couch and purple decorative pillows.

In order to increase the energy efficiency of a hot water heater, consider insulating it by wrapping it in a hot water heater blanket. This special blanket can be purchased at most hardware stores for around twenty dollars, which is a small amount to invest considering the savings you?ll see in your heating bill.

In summary, home improvement is easier now than ever before. By using the tips provided, you can be on your way to having the home you have always dreamed of. With a little time, energy and creativity, you are sure to create the perfect look for your home. The best part is that you can achieve it all for fractions of what you would pay a professional.

GOP Convention Threatened By Potential Disaster

TAMPA, Fla. ? Tropical Storm Isaac could force a shakeup of the security plans for the GOP convention in Tampa, because about half of the expected officers come from other parts of Florida and some could be forced to stay home for the storm, authorities said Thursday.

More than 3,500 officers from 59 law enforcement agencies from around the state are scheduled to come to Tampa to patrol the streets as the convention opens Monday. About half would come from outside Hillsborough County and the city of Tampa.

About 1,700 National Guard troops were already expected to help with patrols. Hillsborough County Sheriff David Gee said the number could increase if other law enforcement agencies don't end up sending officers.

The storm is forecast to start affecting South Florida on Monday and could reach the Tampa area by Tuesday.

"We're in a situation right now where we don't know what's going to happen," Gee said. "My primary concern right now is that we will lose resources."

Gee said some agencies, especially in South Florida, might decide not to send officers to Tampa if the storm threatens their areas. "As things change, they might have to prioritize," he said.

Gee's agency is in charge of the county where the convention will take place. The Hillsborough Sheriff's Office is providing the bulk of the staffing for the event because it is the largest agency in the area and also oversees the county jail. The Tampa Police is the other main agency handling security outside of the convention hall. The Secret Service is in charge of everything inside the convention hall.

The sheriff joined Tampa Police Chief Jane Castor and representatives from the FBI and Secret Service at a media event Thursday. As they spoke to reporters, a large TV screen tuned to a cable news channel showed colorful radar images of Isaac swirling in the Caribbean.

Convention officials said they were working closely with state and federal authorities on monitoring the storm.

"We continue to move forward with our planning and look forward to a successful convention," convention CEO William Harris said in a statement.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott said RNC officials were on a call Thursday with state, local and federal authorities and there were no plans to cancel the convention.

Scott pointed out that the storm is still trending westward, and he hoped it would not have a major impact on Florida.

"It's a forecast and all the forecasts are prone to error, but fortunately it has gone a little bit west," Scott said. "Hopefully it will dissipate by the time it gets over Cuba."

Scott also said Florida "is more prepared than any state in the country for hurricanes."

"The National Guard will be ready for any contingency," he said. "So if that happened then the logical backup would be the National Guard."

Jeff Masters, director of meteorology for Weather Underground, said the storm's current forecast indicates Tampa is unlikely to take a direct hit from a potential hurricane. When the storm passes the Bay area, it's likely to have an east-west motion, meaning it could sideswipe Tampa, causing rain and flooding, but not directly strike the city.

Chief Castor said she wasn't worried about redeployment of officers; when she initially asked other agencies to help, she told them they should only send people that they could spare.

She said the security team factored in the possibility of another event, such as a storm, happening during the RNC.

"We'll adjust our plans," she said. "We're used to that in law enforcement."

Steven Ibison, the special agent in charge of the Tampa division of the FBI, said he wasn't concerned about the number of officers on the ground.

"The FBI isn't involved in weathercasting," he said. "But we have plans in place. We always do here in Tampa."

Castor and Gee stressed it was too early for any agency to dramatically change plans. Castor said that no one would really know where Isaac was headed until late this weekend.

"The only predictable element about a tropical storm or hurricane is its unpredictability," she said.

Darksiders II

When I turned nine, my mom and I had the death talk. She explained to me that death was out of human control and that, without it, there would be no life (pretty heady stuff for a nine year old, if you ask me). My mom clearly hadn't played Darksiders II ?because if she had she would know that anyone can now control Death in the latest action-adventure installment by Vigil Games and THQ Inc.

War and Death: What does it all mean?!
Darksiders II puts gamers in an experience parallel to the 2010 original, except instead of playing as War of the Apocalyptic Horsemen you take control of his brother Death. While in the Horseman's weighty boots, you take Death through the post-mortem of humanity as he looks to expunge allegations about War, pre-maturely starting the events that would inevitably eradicate mankind. Death attempts to defy the Charred Council, the governing body that controls the balance of the universe, by going out and exploring the Nether Realms for proof of his brother's innocence. Along the way, he encounters monsters, giants, and demons that will help or hinder him in this world hovering between Heaven and Hell.

With obvious nods to some of the most influential games in the past 20 years (ie. Legend of Zelda, Prince of Persia, God of War, etc.), Darksiders II has the makings of an instant classic. However, this enjoyable game often falls short in connecting with gamers on any long-term personal and/or original level. Players are bound to be irritated by the game's inability to advance beyond the plot's superficiality. As cool as it sounds on paper, there are definitely moments of boredom, apathy, and repeateded button tapping during cut scenes. Despite such flaws, Darksiders II is a major attempt to create a platform that combines the excitement of some of the best innovations in gameplay all under one hood, a commendable undertaking.

Reaping the Land
In this world, players combine brawny button-mashing with dungeon puzzle-solving in an experience that provides plenty of fun and frustration. At the beginning of the game, players can choose among easy, medium, and hard difficulty levels. With a sprawling interactive landscape that is more than double the size of the 2010 original, the map of Darksiders II is definitely a key selling point, though much of the game's real estate is simply empty plains. Also, every time you cross the threshold into a new area you have to endure a 10-to-15 second loading screen. On the other hand, Darksider II's campaign mode is three times as long as the original's (not counting loading screens).

Death wields two forms of weaponry: The standard quick melee weapon and the stronger yet slower secondary weapon. Players can purchase new abilities, attacks, and weaponry (as in most standard action-adventure games) by obtaining coins through extinguishing foes and finding stray packages along their journey. Death has the potential to harness quite an arsenal of attacks, ranging from summoning demons to taking the form of a giant cloaked reaper. Of the basic maneuvers, I suggest getting acquainted with countering and dodging because you'll need them if you plan on getting far with any of the game's bosses. Plus, seeing a character you're controlling do acrobatic feats while pinpointing a perfect swing with his axe into the face of some monster is an accomplishment in itself.

Although some of the missions are repetitive, I think the slight deviations from one level to the next are what makes the gameplay appealing. After all, remedial-errand-boy-routines are basically the glue for action-adventure games. Missions mainly consist of obtaining X amount of an item for a character, finding someone for information or battle, and exploring dungeons. The biggest problem I found in the gameplay, though, is the AI. Frankly, I don't like encountering baddies who glitch out and walk into walls or get caught behind objects, because it ruins the game's fluidity.

A 'Scythe' to Watch
I have met quite a number of people who are not fans of bombastic (often comic or cartoonish) art in videogames, famously seen in the Fable series. With its deep shadowing, Darksiders II as an offshoot of this. The graphics also stutter a bit, depending on where the camera is situated. The cut scenes are sometimes a bit contrived, but they do serve their basic purpose in expounding upon the talented developers' art skills as well as connecting loose ends in the story.

As for the sound, the voice acting is fair, but the accompanying score is easily forgotten and ignored. I wound up just turning on my own music to appropriate the mood more to my liking.

In the End of Ends
In the end, Darksiders II provides basic single-player hack and slash fun. Along with its campaign mode, Darksiders also has online capabilities, despite serving mainly as just a stat sheet among friends more so than anything else. The glitchy AI and weak story definitely undercut this game. In the end, I suggest taking Darksiders II for what it is: a button-mashing, dungeon-exploring ride that's good for some instant gratification.

Gill's Blog: Teaching Creative Writing

I was really delighted to receive my copy of this book the other week. I have one chapter in it: Finding a suitable narrative voice when writing for children. I?ve written on this theme before and I use the type of exercise I?ve outlined here quite often in my own classes. I even use it myself as I start each new children?s book.

But I don?t really want to talk about just my own chapter here. I?d like to say it?s an excellent reference book for a creative writing teacher or a writer. There are fifty chapters, so that means forty-nine creative writing exercises I?ve not used before. This is extremely useful as my students inform me that what they most like about their classes are the opportunities they have to complete creative writing exercises. It?s my own experience too that I?ll often get a completely new idea by doing one of these exercises.

There are chapters also by several colleagues I know well: Elaine Walker (editor), Steve May (the paperless workshop), Philip Gross (collaborative poetry game), Vanessa Harbour (voice in young adult literature) and Craig Batty (describing feeling). There are several people I do not yet know and I?m look forward to reading about writing animals (Sandra Burr), yoga on the page (Beverly Frydman) and leaving the comfort zone Nicholas Y.B. Wong.

The book is also extremely attractive and very tactile. ???????????????
